There’s no doubt that the past year has been fantastic for Twitter. However, according to research by Nielsen, Twitter’s growth is slowing dramatically!
The last 12 months has seen amazing growth figures for the world’s hottest social media property. Year on year, Twitter’s growth stands at an amazing 1448%. However, month on month Twitter’s growth has slumped to just 7%!
We reported at the end of April, that Neilsen Online Research saw Twitter losing new users far quicker (almost twice the rate) than either FaceBook or MySpace; when they were at the same stage in their development.
Is Twitter losing its mojo – No!
Any service only has a finite number of potential users and as Twitter reaches this figure, it’s natural for its growth rates to slow. It’s also worth noting that 7% growth is still significant, when it’s a 7% increase of such an impressive figure.
I am certainly not noticing any drop in Twitter activity. Our Twitter account @thetechnewsblog has grown massively in the past two months, faster than at any time. Statistics can be used to prove or disprove anything. I think it would be extremely foolish to write Twitter off just yet!

Your dramatic recent growth (and mine) is coming from the cadre of automatic spammy type followers – like @luvlife, @gurugurusocial and @iwillfindyoulotsamoney. In fact, there are so many that I know longer can take the time to look to see if any of them are actual real followers who know me or find me interesting. That’s had a dampening effect on my use of Twitter, because finding new people used to be very intriguing. Now, it’s just a pain in the ass. Twitter needs an Akismet-program that will weed sleazy followers without my ever seeing them.
Yeah, I made the names up above, but just look at your followers, you’ll see a scad of the type I’m talking about. Twitter is Our Neighborhood – Let’s Keep it Clean.
