The Windows 7 beta question

Is the release of the Microsoft Windows 7 public beta a success story or not?  The answer seems to depend on who you listen to. Let me explain!

Windows 7 is no Vista!

It seems that the generally positive reviews of the Windows 7 beta, have generated the kind of buzz that Vista could only dream about.  Whatever you think about Vista, (and some people love it), the publicity surrounding Vista has been far from positive, to put it mildly!

Windows 7 beta download problems

2.5 million copies of the Windows 7 beta were supposed to be available for download, starting 9th January.  However, demand was just too high for the Microsoft servers to take and it was a day later, before they had it under control.  The 2.5 million download limit has now been lifted and anyone can get a copy here, between now and 24th January 09.

Windows 7 beta succeeded and failed

According to VentureBeat, it’s a SUCCESS story.

..it seems to show that demand for Windows 7 is huge (at least if we believe Microsoft, and there seems to be no reason we shouldn’t).

However, listeners to Cnet’s Buzz out Loud podcast on Saturday will have heard that the actual Windows 7 beta (not the servers) had a problem!  The story was announced by Molly Wood, saying;

“Windows 7 has already hit it’s first snag!’

In fairness, the only ’snag’  the OS had hit was the unexpectedly high demand for it, which the Redmond servers couldn’t cope with.  High demand is usually seen as a good thing, not a snag.

None of us will know how successful or otherwise the final version of Windows 7 will be, until it goes on sale and there are some figures to go by. I just wonder how big a role the pre-release publicity will play, in the way the OS is viewed by the general public, when it goes on sale?

What do you think?

    I installed the beta version I think late Friday night and picked up my key the next morning. For a beta version this is very well done! I have experienced nothing that I would call a problem yet. Configuring the Media Center took longer with 7 than it did for me in Vista, that’s the only “negative” thing I can say about it at this time.

    So far I’ve noticed that 7 runs faster than Vista and some layouts are different. I’m looking forward to tinkering with it some more over the next few months

    I think it is a HUGE hit with most people. Just do a search of Twitter for Windows 7 and see the interaction people are having with it.

    Yes there are issues but I think the numbers run 75-25 or so to the good for Windows 7.

    I even used a blog entry to pull some Twitter opinion on Windows 7 to show this very thing.

      I got a tweet from Windows blogger Paul Thurrott yesterday. He said he thinks the negative stuff about the Windows 7 beta, came more from an anti MS bias, than any actual problem with the OS. He’s totally biased toward MS himself, but he makes a point.
