Google Chrome – Homepage and reload please!

So, Google Chrome launched last week to a predominantly positive reception.

I like Chrome – but it needs work!

I am not a fan of Google’s ‘near‘ monopoly of the search market – or the way their founders fly a private airliner all over the world talking about the environment - but I DO like Chrome!

I even managed to get my review of Google Chrome on page one of Google.com, with one of the first reviews of the chrome browser anywhere!

However, after a week of using Chrome I have a couple of requests for the developers.

google-chrome1Can I have a proper homepage button please?

I am not a fan of the way Chrome automatically starts with a list of recently visited pages – I like to go straight to my homepage! Why would anyone want to waste time navigating around half a dozen screen clips, to try to find their ‘usual’ homepage?.

Right click reload or refresh

If I want to refresh the page I am reading, I usually right click my mouse and select refresh or reload.  On Chrome, this is not an option! You have to navigate away from whatever you were doing and find the refresh button.  This is actually starting to really piss me off.  I assumed I would just get used to it after a while, but for things like editiing my blogs or checking my website analytics or following a live text coverage on the BBC – I just won’t use Chrome..

Google Chrome: What would YOU like to see included in the next release?

Okay – other than improved security (which I hope they are sorting out), what would YOU like to see in the next release of Chrome?

    AMEN!!!!

A better way to organise bookmarks is well needed, as well as some good plugins.

There is a plugin project underway, so hopefully future versions of chrome will be ok.

I’m hearing a few worries regarding chrome security though! Steve Gibson (from the TWiT security podcast) is very negative about Chromes cookies.

Right there in the options menu there’s a setting to either use the New Tab page, or open a specific web page (your “home page”).

I think that’s a much better solution than having a seperate home page button – between setting your browser start preference and new tab preference, you basically have the same control without cluttering up the interface with another button.

    Hi Jason,

Thanks for the comment. I main problem I had was with the lack of a dedicated homepage button. So, I could get to my homepage quickly when surfing.

However, one of the guys at Google emailed me through the site (why not leave a comment?) and explained there IS A HOMEPAGE BUTTON.

The thing is, unlike every other browser out there, in Chrome the homepage button is hidden by default!

“Hey Jim – we have included a hompage button:
    Go to ‘customize and control’.
    Select ‘options.’
    Select ‘Basics’
Then under ‘homepage’ tick (or check) “show home button on toolbar.”

It seems really strange to be that one of the most used features of any browser is actually hidden by default.

I have been told that in the next version, there will be a homepage button in the toolbar by default.

Don’t worry it is just hidden on your Google Chrome Option Window!

Click the little wrench button > Options

At the Basics Tab, Go to Home page group and click to check “Show Home Button on the toolbar”

    That’s it!

I agree with you on the Right-Click-Reload option for Chrome. Definitely a must-have.

    Right-Click-Reload!

    srsly

I was hoping to find a way, but alas my search ends here.

This doesn’t have to be so, Google.

Leave it hidden by default if it makes you feel better.

This one may be less noticeable to many.

When I copy text, I want to be able to right-click a field and be able to select paste.

Right now, Chrome won’t let me do that. I must first switch the focus to the field (either by tabbing, or more likely by single-clicking) and THEN right click and select paste.

It is as though the context menu at first is not aware ofthe clipboard contents.

Reload in Chrome? Easy – hit F5 – the shortcut function key works! And because Chrome is fast – the reload is a speedy.

Integrated windows authentication (NTLM). It is a real pain to have to type in my username and password when browsing the intranet at work.

I stopped using Firefox for the same reason. Firefox does allow you to configure this but it requires you to enter the name of every server you want authenticated on. That is also a pain, I want authenticated on them all.

I’d like the option to add website where the pop-up blocker is disabled… Sort of a ‘trusted zone’ list.

I surf a lot on a site that has a forum that opens every link in a new window and Chrome blocks this.

I think the F5 refresh is much easier than both the right-click-refresh and the refresh button in the toolbar. After becoming accustomed to hitting F5, its become second nature – so in no time it will be an out of mind aspect of web browsing.

i think that it would be a good idea if you would be able see 4 different web pages at once in one tab

Need ‘help’ button and this will give you clear idea of the problem(s) we are having.

Had to add ‘Home’ icon but when clicked on does not take me to the home page I have already created.

Most Important: Cannot figure out how to send links and/or pages in an email right from my front page toolbar.

    Thanks anybody/everybody.

I want to jump to chrome home page with a javascript link but I can’t figure out what the url of the home page is….can you help? In most other browsers it is either: parent.window.home or: parent.window.location = “about:home:” Yes I know I can put the home page button in the browser link bar and tell the user to click it but I want to do from a web application automatically..
    Thanks.

I personally like the home page with the most visited links; however, I would like to make them static. I don’t want them to change from day to day based on what sites I visited the day before, so being able to make the home page 9 static links with thumbnails would complete the package for me.

ya i also think that doing reload is better in Firefox ==> as Firefox will provide you add ons by which you can reload whenever you want!! and also the idea of visiting pages on new tab is not the best!!
but positive point is that– it’s the fastest web browser i ve ever used!! but i will not use it for certain websites…

what is the problem of making the option “refresh” available on the context menu?

i’m web developer, and some web applications has frameset, for example, to fix a menu at top of the page. So, sometimes i wanna refresh ONLY the bottom frame, which contains the application form. In this case, hitting F5 will refresh the frameset, not the bottom page.

and you cant say me to abandon frames. Its a available resource, so we can use.
