My Dreamhost nightmare

My Dreamhost nightmare!

I was originally going to write a long post; all about the appalling service I received from web hosting company Dreamhost.com.
.

My Dreamhost server was a joke!

I was going to tell you all how Dreamhost put one of my blogs on a server that wasn’t working – then refused to move it onto a working server because; (I’m serious), their server software wouldn’t let them move my blog!  Yes, a hosting company claims they use software that can’t move a blog from one server to another!
.

Dreamhost customer service – The worst I have ever experienced

I was even going to tell you that Dreamhost provided me with the worst customer service experience of my whole life! For example, their customer services manager actually advised me to leave them! Embarrassingly for him, he forgot to check my account or he would have known that I had already closed my account, by the time he decided to get in touch! :)

His email, advising me to find another hosting company, came with the offer of payment, if I recommended Dreamhost to people (honestly, I am not making this up!)

Dreamhost suck on Google

Why didn’t I write the full review?  Because I found out that when you do a Google search for the term dreamhost suck, there are already over 60,000 thousand pages you can choose from!

I used dreamhost for a year and they were totally unreliable. My website was down more than it was up and their tech support wasn’t interested.

By the way, you forgot to mention that Dreamhost email is so bad that they now tell users to use Google instead!

    Hi Mark,
We only used Dreamhost for a month because we genuinely believed they were just too unreliable to use.

I have never used such a bad service.

Weird, I’ve been with dreamhost for quite some time and haven’t had any major problems.

    @Hector

I asked Robert Scoble to ‘Tweet’ to his contacts, “What has your experience with Dreamhost been”. Through that tweet and my own requests, I got over 200 emails. just 2 were in support of the service.

I appreciate that pissed people are more likely to respond, but that’s more than 100 to one against!

    Thanks for commenting Hector,

    JC

I’ve also been a Dreamhost customer for a while in internet terms (since December 2005).. while they’ve had their share of problems, and I have read other support nightmares from other posts online, I haven’t had any real bad experiences with them.

I’ve stuck around even through all the outages and the recent billing fiasco, since you do get a good bang for your buck and I like the candidness in their blog. While most companies I’ve had experience with will just tell you a problem exists and they’re working on it during outages, Dreamhost will explain exactly what happened even if it was the fault of one of the company founders.

Well, I hope I don’t ever have the same experience you had JC, it really is a pain to move sites over to a new hosting company and reconfigure everything..

I’ve been on DreamHost for almost 2 years, and except for the occasional glitch and glacial IMAP performance, things have worked pretty well — until a couple of days ago. Their tech support isn’t responding, and I’m thinking that *at least* I need a redundant hosting company, just in case DH totally craters. Any recommendations? I’ve heard some good things about 1&1, HostMonster, and MediaTemple, but it may all just be marketing. Don’t bother about BlueHost; its boss admitted in his own blog that they censor.

    Best,
    -Brett

Canceling this week after 49 outages this month alone. 88 for the year – all over 5 minutes.

Final straw came when “support” told me if I wanted better uptime I should try dedicated hosting.

    Unreal.

    Marc,

I feel your pain – they were a total nightmare.

They also did the same with me; used their unreliability to try and up-sell me.

    Yeah – that’s gonna work!
